Star Tortoise Egg Development
My star tortoise laid eggs 6 days ago. All 3 eggs became whitish 2 days ago, not sure whether this is so-called "chalking up". When candled, i don't see any vein nor air bubble. I post the pictures here hoping someone could tell me whether they are fertile. *When can i expect to see the veins if they are fertile?
Incubation conditions: atmosphere temperature: 28-31C; Air humidity: 80-85%; Medium: Dry perlite layered with coarse/hard laterite. (Could this work?) Thanks!!! Link to the original thread http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=46892 Last edited by egyptiandan64; 20-04-2012 at 01:25 PM. |

Thanks all for your info on the vein, etc. It helps a lot.
On the 7th day, i suddenly discovered the Star's eggs showed some changes. A "black round spot" appeared at the center of egg 1 and 3 when candled; Egg 2 remains clear. What is this black round spot? the air bubble? The eggs are fertile? Hope the photos are visible |

Day 40th, 1 gone, 2 still fertile?
2 days ago was the 40th day.
1st and 3rd eggs didn't seem to make noticeable changes lately. The "chalking" seem stop half way as the photos showed since 2 weeks ago. Another reddish brown layer has formed at the bottom about a week ago. I don't have good feeling about this, are they still good? I cross my fingers awaiting your comment. Thanks again!!!!! On day 47th, some changes to egg #3, the embryo seems to have moved down a bit and became not so clear. On day 50th, the embryo almost not visible but something circular (about half cm) diameter formed around it. Please see attached photo. What it is?
Also attached herewith the egg #1 photo taken on day 50th. No obvious changes. Are the eggs still good? Thanksssss.... |

Having double checked egg #1 again, I found the "ring of life" as well on the other side of the egg! The "embryo" (if i got it right) is getting bigger (photos attached).
Actually i Have got 2 eggs from the 2nd clutch 37 days after the first. Both eggs chalked up nicely. Hopefully they will progress smoothly. Thanks !!! Last edited by egyptiandan64; 20-04-2012 at 01:22 PM. |

Just to update the eggs development. It's the 70th day. The embryos seem to have developed into rounded shape babies for both egg #1 and #3 if i am not wrong. Thanks again.

Day 80th. Something happened to egg #1. The dark shade of the embryo seems to have "devided" into 2 parts, one bigger than the other. What is it? an organ? ...or something else?
The embryo of egg #3 is getting bigger. Last edited by egyptiandan64; 20-04-2012 at 02:02 PM. |

Thanks all. Here's the update. Day 98th. The embryos are getting bigger. i found it difficult to take photo as the light is more difficult to penetrate.

Earlier i was unable to take any more photo as the light seems not able to penetrate the eggs, probably blocked by the embryo that getting bigger inside. However, day 110th, the shade of embryos (both the eggs) seem to have "moved" to the left side of the eggs. Hope everything is still fine...
Best Regards. Last edited by egyptiandan64; 20-04-2012 at 02:04 PM. |
