Talking Lily's 'travel table'

Been meaning to post this for a while but here goes..

Taking Lily with us when we go on a cottage break in June this year. I'm getting a table made especially for him (fit on the back seat/seats down so into the back area of our car).
The question is what to use for substrate???
Gonna struggle a bit with filling the table with soil with the travel. I don't really want to use it when there as with dust and mess when filling it..I can forsee problems. Have to consider the owner has allowed Lils to come with us so I have to respect the property.

It's only for a week and I'm hoping the weather will be (fingers crossed) fine for him to go out (under my supervision). There is a big enclosed private back garden and judging from the pics I've seen - Lily will love it.

The substrate for the table is what I'm not too sure about.
I intend to have a standard heat bulb and strip, I'm not going all out with the lighting, just enough so he's comfortable and can be warm if its crap weather and bask first thing.
How would sandpaper fare?? Newspaper might pose a fire risk with the lights...

Any thoughts on this anyone. ??? I'm a bit stuck..
Remember it's only a week.
Ta. xx

How about having a small amount of soil (as that is what he is used to) under the lamp and line the rest with newspaper but stick it down with parcel tape?

Thing is I'm gonna have to lug it there...then pour in. Do you know what I mean...it could get messy. Mmm..
Yeah AC I was thinking of something just in the basking bit too. I am concerned though that it could start to loosen. If you can think, if its throughout the table the soil is pretty much held as its locked in. By doing the one area, there's the open end which which I think will loosen up and dislodge the rest (if you see what I mean) xx

Ikea's Cocosnot (the last four letters are correct!) is often recommended. Its light and compact and expands with water.

You could buy some and try it at home first - a case of "here's one I tried earlier".

Have you got an Ikea near you? Check online the stock levels first as often they are low/sold out and you don't want a wasted journey.

You could contain it in a shallow cat dirt tray or seed tray or something.

If you try it a week or so before, then let it dry out it doesnt become dusty but fluffy. I have a spare brick of the stuff if you want to give it a go.

I've also used this http://www.petsathome.com/shop/small...arefresh-16108

In my girls outside hides, they love it
