Default Burmese Brown Keepers

I am interested to see if ther are any keepers of Burmese Browns, I've seen lots of sulcatas/leopard threads, but not the Browns. I am interested in how you keep them both indoor and outdoor, what problems do you have. I would also like to know how much it cost to heat them?

I am interested in getting this tortoise so any info is important. My wife has concerns that we would be tied to the house for the holidays if we were to get one, What do you do?

Thanks Allan

Getting any tortoise is a tie, as you cant really leave them on their own for too long.
What you have to do it either get a family member trained<g> or a friendly neighbour to help at these times. Thats what I do. My son comes over and stays when we are away, with neighbours on hand (as he is visually impaired) if any emergencies.

Default Burmese Brown Keepers

Hi Allan

I have 4 Burmese Browns 2 that I've had from hatchlings from Cotswold Wildlife Park and 2 that I've had for about 5 years that came from Glasgow Zoo. They are now approx 11 years old. They have very large appetites and feed mostly early in the mornings or in the evenings. They live outside in the summer spending nights in a wendyhouse with a substrate of readi grass and with a large area of weeds for them to wander in. They also have a water wallow. They feed at fairly low temperatures ie 10 degrees C and have really appreciated the muggy wet summer we're having. During the winter they have 2/3rds of the garage with readi grass on the floor and large heat lamps. They also have convector heaters going both day and night if it is cold. They are expensive to keep during the winter months but are very bright tortoises with great personalities.

As Sandy says all tortoises need a lot of attention and cannot be left to fend for themselves.

Thanks for the replys, really helpful. Mary is there any chance of photos of your guys so that I have a idea how big they get. At 11 years are they still growing? Also what is readi grass?

Regards Allan

Hi Allan

Am very new to this and not sure I can do the photo bit but will try to work it out. Readi grass is a feed for horses that is basically just freeze dried grass which the tortoises eat as well as it providing a good substrate.

Here are some photos of Mary's Burmese Browns. I'm sure you will agree they are stunning. One day I'd love to own some of these!
