Burmese Browns

So someone on RFUK started a thread about these and it's got me thinking, perhaps if some pop up I might get a pair. Apparenty they're still very active at 10 degrees and the clutches are often 40+. So why don't we see any for sale in the UK, and if there are any breeders, does anyone know who?

There are a few breeders, one I know is in Norfolk.
There have also been on here a while ago, selling hatchlings.

I've got four sub-adult Burmese who are brilliant tortoises but wouldn't consider breeding them other than maybe a couple of eggs just to try as there are too many large tortoises around that need re-homing IMO. I believe the Norfolk tortoises have been re-homed abroad but they did produce quite a lot of babies before they went.

They look like lovely animals but they do get really big.

I know they get big but they're smaller than Sullys and can cope with the British climate better than some Meds.

I agree totally with Mary, too many larger tortoises come up for rehoming to encourage more to be bred:0(
Keepers think its great to have a larger speices of tortoise to raise, without thinking of the future, theirs or the tortoises.

These are very large tortoises and whilst I love them they are very expensive to keep going especially through the winter. Yes they are active at lower temperatures and don't particularly like the hot sun but they still need a considerable amount of room and of course some heat. As with all large tortoises summers are not the problem but quality of life during the winter is.

I have never been able to put up pictures Lynne but there were some of them on here a few years ago. I will try to take some new pictures and ask Turnip nicely if he will put them on for me. I have only had one full clutch from any of them but in the last few weeks three odd eggs. The first clutch went on the compost heap but the three odd ones are in the incubator just to see what happens.

I have Lynne and they are a really nice breed of tortoise fingers crossed i will have some this year

I know you're only young, but what will happen in the future if you decide you want to go away to university/move away for work etc - are your parents willing to look after (all) the tortoises?
