Trajic Lesson
Thought I'd share some sad news. Just when you think you got it all figured out. The warnings of dogs attacking torts always bothered me and I thought I had my guys protected by having them in pens surrounded by an electric fence. My dog had his fare share of zaps and was scared of it and I thought would never attempt to go inside. Long story short, I came home to find the dog had gotten into the pens and killed my Maggie and Squirt. He chewed on Larry, Leo, and Bam Bam. They are doing fine but I've lost two and it's crushed me. Now the torts are no longer able to be outside without me.

I am so very, very sorry Paul for your loss. You did everything you thought necessary and, to be honest, I wouldn't have done anything differently myself. Most people would assume an electric fence would be a strong enough deterrent for a dog. Thank you for your post; I know it must have been difficult to write but it will help alert people, who are not aware, to the dangers. I really hope your 3 injured torts make a full and fast recovery.

this is exactly what i was talking about last night on the live chat. no matter what your other pets are like you should never trust them with your torts. you took every precaution with the electric fence and its even happened to you! this should be a very strong warning to those who say there dogs love there torts and protect them........... you will only regret it when something bad happens.
i can not imagine what your going though you must be heartbroken. and try not be angry at your dog either..... he would have just thought they where to play with thinking of you x |

I'm so sorry Paul! When I have my guys out in the outdoor enclosure I worry about them all the time when I am at work, we do our best to predator proof it but these things happen even when you think you have it all safe and sound. I am very sorry for your loss! RIP Maggie and Squirt! Glad the other torts are doing ok! Hang in there Paul!
