So sorry to hear that one of your torties has gone missing, that's awful for you. Was this during the day? I have never (touch wood) had one of mine disappear from their garden during the day and at night they are all in the greenhouse. 6" would be quite a big tort and I would have thought fairly heavy - I do so hope he turns up for you

I hope he turns up. What makes you think that a Fox took him? Did you see it?

It's turned pretty cold again, it could have dug down.

I'm REALLY sorry about ut Tort man. I've feared this recently

There's a Fox lurking around my garden. I found him right ON TOP of my Tort one day and I ran out yelling! I got lucky.

But yeah - 6 inches is quite big for a fox. I think that'w why my guy didn't get abducted.

I'd check for digging too.

FYI - You can get (for real cheap on Ebay) sonic Fox deterrents. I haven't had it long enough to know the full results (takes a few weeks to work and I still see the buggar around night time,) but It's defo made a difference in the daytime....

That's just awful! I hope Wendy is right and your tort has just dug down.
I'm scared of foxes in the garden too, especially as I have chickens. All my animal enclosures - torts, rabbit, guineas and the chickens - have lids and anti-tunnelling skirts to prevent foxes from digging under.

i would like to echo what others have suggested that he has dug in somewhere to escape the cold weather.
i would be on hands and knees with a pair of gardening gloves on turning over the enclosure,no trowel or spade just in case he's cut in half !!!!

I agree, I have dug around the outside enclosure for Tyler when he was smaller, dug in places until I saw the back of his shell x

One of mine, a mature but stunted growth female Herman got up from hibernation two weeks ago, crept out of the greenhouse & disappeared! I have been searching for her, turned every bit of soil over in greenhouse & scoured garden especially as for the last week night temps have been subzero, no sign. Then yesterday afternoon I was just leaving their enclosure when I noticed something yellow in the soil!!! Top of her shell! Goodness knows what made her come higher as it was 5 degrees yesterday but brilliant sunshine, she was in a corner protected I guess by cold frame bricks, fence & a tree stump I found where she had been dug in at the base of hardy geraniums .... the same ones I had searched earlier in week!!

I had about 4 of my smaller Hermans disappear in their area back end of last year & it took me ages to find them, they seem masters at the disappearing act!!
