I had thought from early on in the tournament that the Germans defence was dodgy and so it turned out. Spain are the best team in it but that doesn't mean they will win it.
When it comes down to a penalty shootout it isn't 50-50 as people may think, stats will tell you that it's maybe around 70-30 or even 80-20 in favour of the 'better' team. In tournaments like the FA Cup or League Cup or European club matches that go to penalty shootouts you will rarely see a big club beaten by a minnow on penalties. It's a bit like the tennis or the darts, time and again you will see someone blow a match point against a top player and end up a loser, same with the darts, how many times do we see someone just needing to hit a double to beat Phil Taylor only to blow it and lose. Ironically Nadal and Taylor were both beaten recently by no hopers, it doesn't happen often though. There is an element of luck but mostly it comes down to who holds their nerve and invariably it's those who have done it all before |
