Default =++ Questions on my Illegally imported tort ++= HELP PLEASE!

I got it from that evil Tortoises website. I have a few questions.
1) Whar are some of the illnesses you can get from imported torts?
2) What are the symptoms for the above?
3) Should I phone them and tell them its illegal, etc or email them?
4) Will my tort be OK? I care for him loads, and I dont want him to die

Answers will be appreciated.

Hi, because he will have been transported to this country with hundreds of other torts, he is likely to have worms or other parasitic burdens. Its best to get a poo sample to a specialist tort vet to be checked so that the right medication can be given.

You should watch your tort for 'Runny Nose Syndrome' (RNS) the symptoms are bubbles coming from the nose, this spreads thru these imported torts and can also be a sympton of the stress he will have encountered. Again vets help should be sought.

Best to keep up the warm baths to make sure he is fully hydrated.

Is a bath a day good enough? He usually does white creamy poo stuff in his bath. Is this normal?
He doesnt have a runny nose. I just checked.
How can I check to see if he has worms, I heard that vet bills are over the moon in price, so is there a way to check at home?

White urates are normal.

Good that he has no runny nose.

You can sometimes see worms.

It is possible to check poo samples, but I have never done so.

Did you get it with paperwork and/or a sales receipt?

If it is an import a vet visit is a must.

I don't think you can get an illness from and import outside of the bugs you can get from any animal.

The poo looks like those soil lumps you can find sometimes, but a little darker in colour, and about 1 x 1cm in size. Ive never tried crushing one, though.

hi

to have the faeces checked under a microscope

should cost in the region of £10

panacur might be required to treat the worms

this can be purchased on line for about £10 or be provided by the vet

but the vet may choose to give it your tort via a tube or syringe

I hadn't answered because I don't know very much about torts but I would say that if I had purchased them from someone that I believed to be a reputable breeder (and they had led me to believe this) and advertised as such then I would report them to the appropiate organisation!

If you have the time a couple of warm baths a day would be ok, if not the one a day will make sure he takes in some water even if you dont see him drink they take in water through the cloaca (bum!!)!!. The white creamy stuff is ok this is a build up of urates being expelled from the body. In reptiles much of the waste is not soluble and is termed uric acid which is the white or cream portion of the faieces that they pass.

It really is best to get the poo checked by a tort vet as there are different worms and parasites, its needs to be identified so that the right worming or medication can be given, you can often send a poo sample or drop one in and it doesnt cost a lot.

You dont want to take any risks where the tort has been imported, I lost one that was bought from an internet site, you have to be on guard as the torts can go down very quickly.

Hope this helps
