Sounds like RNS (Runny Nose Syndrome) which is a sort of cold. You need to get him to the vet as soon as possible.

EB it may not be RNS there are many reasons why a tortoise can have a runny nose, to dusty in the enclosure, reaction to something etc.......
I have a few questions Is it something that has just come on? Have you made any changes to the enclosure? Do you keep the tort in a table or a viv? What sort of substrate are you use? Is it a clear liquid and is it constant? How old id your tortoise? Cheers Sara |

It could be rns so best take him to the vet; just to be safe as he may need an antibiotic. There could be other reasons eg dusty enclosure / just been bathed / eaten watery foods etc but if in any doubt best to arrange a vet visit.

HI Jo,
I have a leopard tortoise and he does have a runny nose but he has been checked by the vet who as said it is due to the fact we live in damp Cornwall when he is designed for Africa Personally if it was me I would get him/her checked by a vet just in case (better to be safe then sorry) and we wont be able to give you piece of mind like a vet can. I would move your leopard tortoise into a table as air circulation is very important with this species. He should be kept on a mix of sand and top soil Leopard tortoises are prone to runny nose syndrome and can be a bit sensitive. Temps are also important hence a table being more suitable for the species as they can decide what is better for them, hot end or cool end etc. I hope this helps |

Good luck with all the advice but definitely let us know what the vet says. Also, as has been said - try and get him into a tortoise table and correct substrate (mentioned above). However, if he is a hatchling, some may argue that a viv is not going to harm. I dont like personally but just that I have read this (Alan/caledonia, I think mentioned this the other day) whether that is meant for a specific species.....I know not!
But good luck jo165 - main thing is to get him better, get the right treatment and change what is neccessary. xx |
