Yes if on a thermostat, as soon as the table temp dropped to what the stat is set, it will come on. If not on a stat it would spark in straight away switched on.

ok can you suggest a thermostat to use then? and does the watt of the mat make a difference to how effective it is or is it all based on size? thanks. Were learning lots from this.

The size increases with the wattage 3w to about 62w a 100w habistat mat stat cover's these wattages.
