Default Heat mats

Were looking at getting a heat mat for our baby tort, just wondering if anyone knows a good/cheap place to get one from?
also what size should we get? our tort table is 2ft x 3ft.

Any help would be great! thanks.

you only want a small one, one that will just do say the sleeping area, the tort must still have its choice of cool/hot areas, ebay is usually the cheapest but they don't cost much anyway, at a guess I'd say £10 upwards less if you can get a 2nd hand one on ebay. I think they go by size not wattage and you tort will soon find the warm area even if its only a few inches square, make sure its well covered with substrate I have probably a couple of inches over mine, you only want it warm and if your tort is a digger then put something between the mat and soil that will allow the heat to come through but will protect the mat.

Does for safety, heat mat's/ceramic bulb's not need a thermostat.

I don't quite understand that statement Paul!!
I would use a thermostat on these & all heat mats etc:

Marg.

Paul, i'm sure you meant this to.

I use a thermostat on Bolders as its in an enclosed area and I want the 'room' warm as well as the soil but the babies one which is only covered by the bark isn't. I have a good couple of inches of soil over it and the mat itself is only small, the soil only gets warm, I'm not sure a thermostat would work if I want warm soil rather than warm air, I suppose the probe could be pushed into the soil anyway I haven't had any trouble with ir getting to hot.

Hi,

I use a heat mat for my Hermanns at night!

It is taped to the underside and has a mat stat attached so it doesn't get too warm for them!

I say it's taped to the underside but in their home the base has two parts cut out, one for a litter tray and the other hole has glass covering it which the mat it attached to with polystyrene covering that! (there's pictures on here somewhere showing it )

Rheostat is cheaper and safer. I gives the most control to the keeper. The temperature does not have to be exact which is what you get with a thermostat.

Ed could you link me to these rheostats you have been using, not really sure if the ones I've seen are right and I'm keen to find a cheeper alternative to dimming/ thermostats.

Cheers, and sorry to hijack this thread
