How do you get them not to be this messy??? I only left him alone for half a day and his water bowl is a mud bath.

That's what you have to expect when you are keeping an adult tortoise in a confined space. I'd look at getting a bigger, deeper water dish and move it to one side so he doesn't keep walking through it.
I'd maybe remove some pebbles and one of the ornaments also.

Hi Roberta, heartbreaking when you put so much into it, but that's just what they do while exploring!!Do make sure that his basking and cool end temperatures are right and he will eventually eat, settle and bask. Just remember temperatures are all important. The basking lamp distance does look very close. Do you have thermometers each end of the table? If he can't bask because his lamp is too low then he will scuttle about all the time.

I tried a different method when feeding him today instead of putting a few of the pellets ontop of the green/petals I mashed it all up and sprinkled crumbs on top and he seemed to it most of it so ill keep trying that.
At my work place they keep tortoises and they have a bowl surrounded by pebbles but they don't get messy so ill try getting a taller bowl and larger pebbles see if that helps |

OOOH late night then or hasn't he adjusted to the clocks changing?! It's really helpful to have a thermometer permanently at each end of the table which you can check every hour or so and take the guesswork out of the situation.they are totally temperature dependent for proper activity and digestion.

Just checked on him he's in the basking area but in the corner sleeping. The cooler end reads 23c so he shouldn't be cold. Lights are off now.
