Default Would you belive it!

Would you belive it, just as i am coming to the end of my first week of winding Alfie down for hiberbnation, he appears to have a problem with one of his eyes!

The eye its self seams to be okay (no scratches etc) but a few mornings now his eys has been very watery and looks like it had some "gunck" in the corner and on one occasion his eye was even stuck shut.

I bathed him and it seamed to improve this as he put his head under the water and rubbed the eye on his leg. however, each morning it seams to have gone back to being watery / sticky.

He is kept on a hemp subtrate, so i thought that it might be dust in his eye? is this something i could use diluted Betadine help this, and if so how do you suggest i use / bath it and what ratio should i dilute it to ?

Does this mean that i can not hibernate him, or that i should at least delay the prosses?

i have taken some pic but they do not really show well enough what i am trying to explain...

Thanks

Fi

Hi Fi,

Sorry to hear your tortoise's eye is a little sticky, hemp usually isnt dusty so it shouldnt be that, but maybe a little bit got into the eye, bathing is good because the tortoise will use the front legs to clean the eyes. baths can be in diluted bedatine too, if so desired.

It has also been suggested that a drop of cod liver oil dropped onto the eye from a capsule pricked with a pin can be beneficial for eye problems.

Hope this helps.

Ade

Do you think this sounds serious enough that it will prevent him from hibernating?

I will get some cod liver tablets today, however i already have some betadine, but do not know what ratio to dilute this to. please would you be able to advise me of this?

Thank you very much x

im not too sure that betadine will be good for his eye, i just use cod liver oil tablets with a little hole poked in it so it can drop into his eye.
Mine get this from time to time, and it usually works.
You could also try spraying his hide with water at night, this gives him a little humidity and sometimes helps.

Hi Fi, I am not sure on the dilution ratios for bedatine, maybe we might get a dilution ratio off those who have used it before.

Josh, I would imagine that bedatine being added to a bath for bathing wounds would also get into the eyes anyway so I wouldnt see this as a problem especially when its diluted.

Its codliver oil capsules you need for dropping some in a torts eye<g>.
To clean a torts eye you should use only cooled boiled water, using a cotton bud or the like.

Thank you Sandy. It seams that for the time beeing that his eye has been getting better by its self just through bathing alone and him cleaning his eye on his leg's.

In fact i think it is allmost okay now, i have not seen any "gunck" or watering yesterday or so far today

thank you everyone again for your help
