Chalk/limestone flour
Hi all,
I've recently bought some chalk for the torts, as usual, I have questions Can they overdose on chalk or will they just eat what they want? Do I need to sprinkle limestone on their food as well? Should they have a cuttle bone at the same time as chalk? Anything else I've forgotten to ask about? Thanks in advance xx

Quote:
And chalk and limestone flour are both calciumcarbonate:0) Cuttle bone is fine as well as calcium as this helps keep their beaks in trim too:0)

mine used to have limestone in a shallow dish and cuttlefish and lumps of chalk just lying around, I used to collect the chalk when we went walking if I found it. The torts were never really interested but it was there if they wanted it, my young sully used to love the limestone flour though as did the hatchlings they would often have white heads, I never bought chalk though just collected it.

I never put calcium over the food either:0)
I leave it in a shallow container, and my hatchlings will eat it readily. As does any captive bred tortoise. I will say I have never seen any of my older wild caught originally eat any. But all the females will chew on cuttle bone when they need too.
