Help with Possible rns
Hi guys and girls
My hermanns Harriet came out of hibernation on Sunday and we were a little concerned because she was breathing with her mouth open, this stopped after a couple of hours and she seemed to be ok but a bit quiet, after that she drank from her water bowl and in the baths we regularly gave her but we then noticed a wetness under her chin and she still hasn't eaten. We took her to the vets and she said her chest was clear. Whilst there she spurted a watery substance from her nose. The vet wasn't sure and advised we keep and eye on her. Vets have phoned and said after speaking to another vet that she thinks she has rns. We are taking Harriet back today for an injection of baytril or marbasil ( not sure on the spelling) does this course of treatment seem the best way to go? I do trust the vet but it would be nice to back it up with what you guys think as I value your opion on this Cheers, Paul

Helo, the specialist reptile vet is the best for diagnosis, but if it was me i would make sure they check again if it is actually RNS, Lilly has had clear water from her nose before but it wasnt RNS, i had her checked and she is in good health, i would make sure before any unecessary antibiotic treatment, its good her lungs are clear x

I've always been given an injection of Baytril and then some oral Baytril to take and administer at home. In the meantime keep Harriet warm night and day. Once on antibiotics I would keep the temps up overnight as well - In the past I have used a ceramic heater to keep a spot of 30 degrees. Antibiotics work best when torty is kept warm.

Cheers guys and girls
Harriet has he'd her first injection today, we did speek to the vet about giving it to her orally at home but I think this time we will just get her sorted and look into how to do that if it comes back. Temps won't be a problem to keep at 30 so I will make sure I set it to stay there overnight. Just a quick question the vet said she should now not have any contact ever with other tortoises incase she passes it on! Is this right? I understand the need to keep her seperate till she is cured but I don't like the idea of her not being with her mate timmy ever again and no more babies for us Please could you advise

How long in hibernation to come out yesterday is very late?
This may be part of the cause of her being poorly.

She was hibernated late January due to her carrying eggs, I think a total of 12 weeks, her mate was hibernated at the same time and has come out fine.

Whether or not she has to be kept seperate depends on whether the RNS is caused by the Herpes virus. I was told that any eggs are not affected if washed in a weak F10 solution when laid. This was a reputable exotics vet who looked at all my iberas after hibernation as one or 2 were a bit snuffly. don't know what others' opinions are?

Sorry to maybe ask a dumb question but how would I know if she has the herpes virus and how would she have contracted this? She was healthy with no sign rns before hibernation

If a tort has suspected RNS, whatever the cause I would separate immediately and for a couple of weeks after it appears to have gone
