Gutted
Hello everyone!
I am a bit gutted at the moment, I applied to work in London Zoo in 2011 for work experience (to become a vet) I got a letter saying to wait to see if I got an interview for a place. But today I recieved a letter saying that they were no longer doing work experience next year "to review the course" and "improve it for the future". But, on the news on Saturday I saw that they had a severe monetary crisis at the zoo. Now call me cynical but...!?? Have to look somewhere else now.

Sounds rubbish. I wouldn't worry about it affecting your chances of getting onto a veterinary course. They don't ask for work experience at zoos as a requirement as they're more bothered about abattoirs, kennels, catterys, different types of veterinary practice, farms and stables. Just try to get plenty of variety prior to applying. I nearly did this myself but changed my mind about being a vet.

Thats pants! you would have thought in this day and age that places like London Zoo would welcome any free help with open arms. Hope that you find a placement. our pets need people like you

I agree with Helen, try to get work experience at other places other than zoos, my best friend wants to become vet and she has done work experience at, a veterinary surgery, kennels and a farm. So just try to vary the places you go to. I think it does help

I suppose they have to have someone to supervise, there must be a lot of legal requirements for a zoo to take on people, its a shame though.

Are you looking for a paid position or are you looking to do voluntary work?

Yes we are coming Wendy! That could great if you could find me somewhere! I have worked a week in a vets, I have worked 12 saturdays on a farm (doing 12 more at the moment) and have worked most sundays at a cattery in the morning
I am looking for voluntary work, don't get my national insurance until around... March, but when I do, I am looking for a saturday job with animals straight away!
