Default ceramic heater or ahs

can anyone tell which would be better a cermic or a ahs a bit confused

I use both. Costwise ceramic, bulb holder and stat may be slightly cheaper than the AHS. The other thing with the AHS  is mounting it suitably for a tortoise. It can be used face down but it needs a heat proof, sturdy mounting. Depends if your looking to use it as a basking spot or for background heat really.  A ceramic spot will do just that, create a heat spot and gradient, an AHS provides a wider area of heat.

I have no experience with ahs. But bought a 60 watt ceramic heat emitter to keep my temps up in the winter and it kicks out a lot for a 60 watt! Was pretty cheap too. I'd recommend them

decided to go with a ceramic bulb, now will that stay on all the time cos my heat lamp is on a timer goes off 700pm comes on 0650am any thougths....

Mine is on a timer and comes on in the morning and off at night. But I suppose it would depend what your temps are like. My tort room hasn't gone below 17C at night yet so I let it go off when the light does but may need to have it on during the night with the winter coming in.

Ahhhhh... a quartz heater. $20 if not marketed for a specialty market.
