Default Natural Sunlight For Yellowfoots

How important is it for yellowfoot tortoises to have an outdoor incloser?
I have a large indoor incloser with the correct heating, lighting and humidity and seem happy here, I have taken them outside and they usually just hide, all advise is greatfully received

Hi Bluey
Yellowfoots are shy tortoises when it comes to bright open areas especially as babies , remember they come from rather dark dense tropical rainforest floors hense the large eyes to help them see in the dull light so a well planted area outside would possibly be more appreciated than a typical pen that would suit a med speices .
Uvb is important to all tortoise speices .

Hi,

My Reds and Yellows are out all day and sometimes nights in this weather, the only reason I bring them in at the moment is to make sure they have a good drink.

As Darren said they will spend most of there day doing little and hanging out in shade but they are still getting exposed to the best possible UV in this sun! I would advise to get them outside.

I do not know the size of your yellow but my observations are based on adults.

Darren / Mitch

If yellowfoots come from darker conditions, how important is the UV for them?
As bright light / sun will of course have lots of UV.
Still learning<g>.

Hi Sandy
Yellowfooted will derive d3 from part of there diet as hatchlings/juveniles by consuming animal prey like snails and other slow moving invertabrates which in turn contain d3 in there own bodies, but they will untilise open spots in the canopy that allow sunlight to penerate of course these shady glades are not as intense as the open areas med come fromso the eyes can evolve to be large without damage from bright sunlight .
