Well the reptable vet i am using charged £39.60 for a consultation and said that blood tests and xrays would set me back £350... and i don't really trust normal vets around here, they gave me a whole load of wrong information last time, and sent tort home with a pear in his box...

I am giving him a call later anyway as he said to call on a Thursday.

I don't think he is weeing, as he is putting on so much weight, but have set him up on kitchen roll now so i can see if he is.

I am now going to bath just once a day for a while in the reptaboost, unless the vet says something different later.

Thanks Ed for the info, i will look out for anything green being passed.

Thanks everyone.

I don't want to be a prophet of doom and I really don't have that much experience and knowledge, but my gut reaction is that it might be time to consider putting the animal to sleep. If it is drinking so much water and putting on all that weight, with nothing coming out the other side, surely this is a form of suffering?

You'll see from above, Laura, that I said "If".

Didn't Ed say the animal would go so far as drowning itself? Surely if there is a danger of this it's time to think about putting it to sleep. I know it must be very difficult to make that decision and I don't envy Jemma at all.

From the photos shown the tortoise is nowhere near that stage. If it does get near that stage the tortoise will look bloated. At that point I might suggesting euthanizing the animal.

Why are you so keen on killing the animal? How do you know it is 'suffering'?

Ed,

I am not keen on killing the animal. That's an outrageous thing to suggest and I don't think I have ever said anything that would justify you coming to such a conclusion. I have been very careful with my words. I have always used "if" and "surely" - it's questions I have been asking. I haven't ever tried to advise Jemma to do that. What I have said is "if such and such is the case, then wouldn't such and such be an option". That's all.

I do not know if it is "suffering" or not. What I have said is that if the kidneys and liver are not working and the animal is drinking itself to death, then perhaps it could be suffering....again, a question and an assumption.
