I am no expert, but underfeeding is preferable to over feeding<g>. But its the hardest thing
to do. To let them graze is far far better if you can.

Well dont feed until you know you cant put him out<g> that way if the weather is not so good
and you have to keep him in, he can be fed as a treat<vbg>.

my torts live mainly indoors, they have access to a seeding tray with loadsa grass growing so that they can graze whenever and they live on meadow hay as part of their substrate so they can eat this too. Fortunately meadow hay and grass are high in fibre and therefore i dont think they are big causes of pyramidding even with permanant access to graze. (correct me if this is wrong)
i feed mine a mix of weeds about twice a week with calcium powder and nutrobal on both meals. They have an hour to eat as much as they can and then it is taken away. I felt cruel going from once a day to twice a week feeding them but that is why i grew the grass in there enclosure, if they are hungry then they will have to graze, i think this way it will resemble the wild much more closely and this way they have the more accurate diet of 70% grass 30% weeds, also they can graze right through winter as i have a backup tray. Also with the grass, darren told me he thinks it uptakes calcium so i pour limestone flour on it then water it so that the calcium solution can be absorbed into the grass and provides a more natural source of calcium. |

They can get all the nutriants they need from natural foods growing in the garden. So the
occasional miss is not a problem. Or you can do what I do, I put a shallow dish with a mix of calciumcarbonate and vionate or nutrabal. Mine eat readily from it when they need a top up of calcium.

Just a reminder that tortoises can over feed on correct/foods in their diet too. Which will still
cause pyramiding, all beit not so bad.

hi i like to think of feeding as not so much overfeeding as under exerciseing i have found that all my tortoises seem to eat more yet keep a better shape when they have access to the main enclosures and daylight 7 days a week i understand that in the wild they feed on the move fertiliseing the plants as they move forward this is why when you keep several together itis better to have more than one food bowl so nobody has to eat dirty food what normally happens is the largest tortoise will get in the tray eat and defecate then leave a horrible mess for the rest i know not everyone has large groups of tortoises but this can happen with two or three when you have a dominant animal.
