testudo hermanni hermanni/boettgeri sarda
Can anyone, please, tell me anything about this subspecies and whether it really exists or is merely being proposed as a distinct subspecies?
Thanks, Sean

That wiki page is really interesting. To see photos of hermanni hermanni from different areas all together. Until Hermanni Chris brings something out along those lines this might be as good as we're going to get.
I haven't heard of the Hermanni Hermanni Sarda tho' I know they have hermanni hermanni on Sardinia which are not exactly the same as those from elsewhere. I don't know how far you could go with recognising this as a subspecies - I reckon its a regional form of the hermanni. Havne't been to sardinia but I would love to. I believe they also have marginated. Unless Burlesconi and his mates build villas on the whole thing the island might continue to offer a home to these animals into the future.

In the German publication Marginata (I'm not sure which issue off the top of my head) there is an article on the Testudo hermanni hermanni complex. The author proposed, I think 8 new subspecies in the article. As far as I know, none of the new subspecies have been accepted.
