Hatchling setup idea
I was reading Vetters book on Hermanns again and came across a flooring for tortoises using modelling clay as the base. Easy to clean, creates a "landscape" etc.
You add pockets of deep substrate to allow the tortoises to dig, similar to what I do for my adults when indoors rather than flooring out large enclosures with deep soil. You will need: 1 enclosure (I've used a 4x2@ rabbit cage base) Modelling Clay Substrate of choice Playsand Bushmills Black Bush Irish Whisky (optional) 1. Begin forming the clay across the base of the enclosure. Make mounds and dips, not even throughout. 2. After about 30 minutes you will become bored of this and make a small replica of the Devils Tower from Close Encounters of the third Kind which you will photograph and email to friends with the words "WHAT DOES IT MEAN, WHAT DOES IT MEAN????" in large capital text. 3. Start adding the white clay to replicate a little rocky outcrop 4. Make a poor quality Morph Model 5. Watch it fall over and cackle as it assumes the corpse position so beloved of police dramas |

6. Realise that with the white clay you can make a Chas to go with the Morph
7. A grizzly end 8. Build a little wall. This area will hold the deeper substrate 9. Sprinkle a light layer of your substrate mix onto the clay. 10. Add a deeper substrate mix to what will eventually become the sleeping area. (Note the Devils Tower effect which will enable tortoises to scramble up and down the wall) 11. Wait for it to dry out To be continued..... |

Good idea. What's with the 2 colours of clay, is there a difference other than colour or is it just so there's no racist accusations levelled at you?
Look out Charlie Dimmock |

It's looking good. Me and the enclosure have been drying out all day.
A few more days and a visit to the off licence and I'll have it cracked. |
