Hi,
can anyone enlighten me if this plant is an opuntia? and if so, what type/subspecies of opuntia? it sure looks like one.

I'm no expert, but it doesn't look like Optunia to me.

The thing to do when taking opuntia cuttings is to pull a pad off then leave it to dry for a few days/a week, until there is a sort of scar tissue on the part you are going to put in the compost. Don't pull a pad off then immediately plant it. Support the new pad with a few twigs and don't overwater and it should soon root. Overwatering kills most of these succulents/cactus.
