I have used top soil and have definitly found some brands better than others but am now definitly considering coco coir - can you just buy any type or should it be from somewhere specifically for animals/reptiles?

I do varying depths in different areas but about 1 - 2 inches or less for me.

I love the mental image of you digging them up like potatoes. Oh if only it were that easy to breed them and bring them into the world!!! I'd be inundated with lots of scrumptious hatchlings!

spud du like !
funny how they get bigger they can still hide away and not be found, like at the back of the chives I check first, but they foil me time and again ! I blame strategically dug 6" coco coir when they're younger !! ha ! CB

You are right CB, they are certainly tricky to find, even when you know they can't be far away!! When mine had free range of the garden I was forever looking for them hence the development of Tort Lodge and Gardens!! As lovely as it is to have free range torts I couldn't be doing with all the trampling about in undergrowth and digging in soil especially when it was raining x x x x hugs x x x
