I envy you Bev, I used to babysit for a couple who had an open fire, I used to love sitting watching it crackle Have no idea why its smoking on you, if you have a coal man who you get coal from I'd maybe say to them, they might know

Hi, do you mean you have just lit your fire again? if so it could be something like a bird nest in it, or maybe a dead pigeon or something. If you have been lighting it since February, why? do you feel the cold alot! seriously though sometimes my fire would puff smoke back into the room sometimes when the wind was gusty or blowing in a certain direction, if this happens you may require a higher chimney pot, or do as we have and change to a wood burner

Ours does this every now and again it's usually some kind of stuff that has taken residence in the chimney...pigeons, stones, bits of tree and the odd bit of clothing that has blown off the line lol

Thanks for the advice, although the chimney was only cleaned in February I will get it done again. This past couple of weeks I have had a fire on everyday so don't think anything has nested in it. But something is wrong as this fire has been lit on and off this past 20 years and never smoked

Just had a thought, could it just be the coal? as you probably know they do vary in quality or if it is damp can cause more smoke
