Default Hermann's???

Hi & Hello

I've joined up here in the hope that someone can shed some light on an ID problem.

Basically, a friend of mine emailed my some photos of their 2 torts that they bought last year. Apparently they were bought as Hermann's, and they have the A10 certificates for both. However they are now not sure if what they have are both Hermann's?? They are both coming up for 2 years old. They believe that maybe the larger of the 2 is in fact a Marginated?

I only have a Horsfield, so am not sure whether they are right. I do know that the larger one has, by the look of it, been over fed and probably fed the wrong foods looking at the coning.

Anyway, here's the photos.

This is the smaller one

And the larger

Thanks for any help

They are both Hermanns and look to be Testudo hermanni boettgeri. The smaller one is a male and the larger one a female.

Your Welcome

Danny

Thanks for that quick reply

Would you agree that the larger one looks over-fed and maybe not fed correctly?

She's a bit pyramided, but not bad. She has at least the normal domed shell and not a flat shell like some tortoises that weren't fed well. It shouldn't bother her any in the long run, especially if her diet is better now.

I shall ring me friend and put their mind at rest. I'll speak to them about the diet too. I had no idea they even had torts lol

I posted photos a while back of my tortoise asking if it was a tunisian spur thighed. I got told yes but he is identical to these and you are a saying herman?

That's because your tortoise doesn't look like these tortoises really What your seeing is just a superficial resemblence between the 2. Hermanns have nails on the ends of their tails and Spur-thighs don't. Spur-thighs have spurs on their thighs and Hermanns don't. Hermanns almost always have divided supracaudal scutes (the big scute over the tail) and Spur-thighs hardly ever do.
It does take a bit of practice to tell the 2 apart, but it can be done if you look close and pay attention to details.

I wasn't sure exactly but thought the little one was a hermann and the other was an ibera or something else
I think I could definitely tell a horsfield from anything else though
