The coal seems dry, today I pulled everything out and noticed the basket has fallen a bit on one side so going to see if I can fix that. I will get the chimney cleaned again.

when we had a coal fire we had that problem and fitted a canopy thing (not sure if that is what it's called) to the fireplace. it did help a bit but I think a draught is what is required so that the chimey draws the smoke up.
what I mean by the canopy is it's like the peak on a cap |

Northern Ireland unfortunately doesn't get the good weather that the rest of the UK does, we didn't even get any of the recent heatwave that the UK had
