Default Maslow's hierarchy of need's

Ok guy's here's a very debatable question how does our needs become priority

am i right in that the writer is saying that our needs as humans are more important then animals if so I can understand that those that keep animals put a higher importance on them than those that don't. I for example even go so far as not wanting to donate to charitys/organisations where animals are used to test products/medicines on, however whether i would still feel that strong if I or mine developed something that did rely on that research for treatment, I'd like to think I still would feel strongly against the use of animals. I do feel that as humans and having far more control over the world and its climates/habitats etc that we have to speak up for those that can't and that every animal whether it be for meat or pet should have as decent a life as poss however short that life maybe. My animals do mean as much to me as family members their comfort and wellbeing often being put before our pleasure my parents taught me that and I hope I've passed it on to my children. I'm not sure if you wanted replies or not so hope I'm on the right track.
