Default I need some box turtle help please.

I have ten boxie eggs in my incubator, and at least seven are fertile.
My question is, how can I keep the hatchlings (once they are six months old) warmed through the night in Winter?
I don't want to use a viv, I would prefer to use an open topped enclosure.

I know I can use a heat mat, but what sort is best?
I have found a water proof matt, but not sure if they work or not.
Or would an ordinary heat mat work?
Are thermostatically controlled heat mats any good?
I hope Dan can help, or of course anyone else that has boxie knowledge.

A CHE at night should do the trick Sandy. I also found my hatchlings were more active without a bright light on them, so just room lighting and the CHE during the day should help them be more active. You can add a UVB light after 6 to 8 months. Make sure before that you supplement with vitamin D3.

Thanks very much Dan, that has helped me a lot.
I shall probably be asking more if and when the eggs hatch.
I did have one hatchling last year, and I have struggled a little. But she is doing well.
I just wanted to be better prepared this time.

Hi Dan

I know nothing about CHE's, do they come in different heats?
If so what sort of temperature one would I need?

They do come in different wattages just like light bulbs. You can also use a thermostat on them so that is very helpful. 22C at night is fine and 29C during the day is fine also.
