Default Rns

One of my horsfields has RNS. She is bubbling excessive amounts from her nose and sounds raspy on breathing. She hasn't eaten in about a week and has been looking very down and weak. The vets have given us 5 days of baytril and we are currently on day 3 and the bubbling just seems to be worse. The vets have advised us to syringe feed baby food and we have been bathing her and wiping her nose twice a day. She developed the RNS after being seperated from the group due to her violent behavior she has suddenly started showing. Do you think it could be stress from being on her own after spending 9 years with others?

We have also taken her off the coco coir as it was all getting stuck to her nose. Has anyone got any advice? I just feel so sorry for her and want her to be better

Jemma

Are you keeping her warm day and night Jemma? 5 days is not a long enough course to get rid of an infection usually. A 2 week course would be much better.

I believe stress can bring it on, in my experience if the RNS is that bad,the tort will need more than 5 days of baytril, more like 2 weeks, but I could be wrong.
And you will need to keep her night time temps up at around 30, this is what other people have said before on here. But they don't eat because they can't smell when RNS is this bad and torts rely on their sense of smell a lot.

Hopefully someone else will come along and give better advice, but hope this helps.

Oh there you go Dan beet me to it, I some of it correct .

Hi Jemma1,
I wouldn't bother syringe feeding as torts can go for weeks without eating and are fine. As long as tort is hydrated. One of my large males has RNS, and I think syringe feeding him his Baytril is about as much stress as he needs right now. He hasn't eaten in 2 weeks (been on Baytril for 8 days now) and today he just picked at a bit of food, which I think is a good sign. I syringe feed him his Baytril (without needle of course) because he's quite large, and that amount of Baytril - 0.5ml, won't stay on a piece of cucumber. It's also apparently foul tasting, so I try to put it near the back of his mouth, hopefully past any taste buds. RNS is concerning though, each tort shows slightly different signs; this large male has hardly opened his eyes much for a week, and just lies under his basking light sleeping, then goes back to bed. What a worry!

By the way, she wouldn't be expecting eggs would she? Sometimes gravid females become angry females and after egg-laying calm down a bit.

Could it be that she was being aggressive because she was feeling ill? She may be fine once recovered. My female was very aggressive I assumed she was gravid so seperated her but she had stones impacted inside her so she obviously acts aggressive when ill.

My vet told me to feed baby food too, but I mushed up weeds really small and popped them in her mouth instead with some pre alpin and a few pellets

Jemma you probably already know this but dont forget to wipe the tops of both arms using F10 (with seperate wipes) as they wipe their nose & re-infect themselves, do it several times per day

Thank you everyone for your replies, i didnt think about keeping her warm at night. Would i be able to use a heat mat under some blankets to do this?

Also, i have a whole bottle of baytril that the vets gave me in the past which is still in date, could i just use this, in the same measurement as she has had each day to extend the antibiotics for 2 weeks? I have been opening her mouth to give it to her so far.

She keeps sneezing too, and the runny nose is getting everywhere. I have only been wiping her nose and face with tissue in the day and giving it a good clean in the bath, so thanks for the tip about cleaning the legs! I'm wondering if it was stress from being seperated that caused the RNS.

I don't think she has eggs, she has only just reached 6" and has not been showing any signs of being gravid. Shes just really not herself, poor thing.
