Default Flashing tortoise worry

I've recently been told i have a male Hermann, today he has decided to confirm that to me.

I'm sorry if this sounds silly but i have a concern. I have two tortoises and they have a mix of top soil and sand and substrate in their enclosure. At the moment he is flashing when he encounters slate or the cuttlefish within the enclosure. Could this not hurt him if it gets the sand/top soil on him when flashing? Sorry, but i read another post some time ago about how they could cut themselves with the gritty bits of sand when doing this.

Help!

The top soil/sand mix is one which is sold already mixed for tortoises in the reptile shop.

Fleur is three and a half. I was quite shocked when he did it, mainly because i was concerned about him scratching himself. Don't laugh, i'm not some innocent but it just seemed weird that a little tortoise could have something that size!

I'll have a look tomorrow at the packet tomorrow. I think it is called tortoise substrate, no that's not right - and will post it.

Too right about being well endowed. Scared the life out of me! It was almost as big as the tortoise. Sorry, too much information now
