Bailey's Limestone Flour/Calcium question
I bought a 3kg tub of this http://www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk/w...ments/lime.htm yesterday £4.75 from a horse place. It is natural limestone flour and it says on the tub 39.4% calcium. I know that limestone flour is 97% calcium carbonate so what is the difference between CC and calcium and knowing that cuttlebone is 85% calcium carbonate (but contains other minerals too) what % of that 85 is actual calcium?
Kirkie will know I bet |

I thought that too but didn't realise calcium and calcium carbonate were not the same thing. it's 39.4% calcium paul but 97% calcium carbonate that's what I'm wondering, what the difference is between calcium carb and just calcium.. and how much actual calcium (rather than calcium carbonate 85%) is in cuttlebone

Calcium is an element, whereas calcium carbonate is compound CaCO3 which includes, calcium, carbon and oxygen.

so would it automatically follow that cuttlebone with 85% calcium carbonate would have less calcium that limestone flour at 97% CC?

Dont know the answer to your question Alan but I read the calcium in Cuttlefish wasnt as readily absorbed/beneficial to torts. (I think my tub is Bailey's)

I think cuttlebone contains other minerals. that bailey's is a bit course compared to the last stuff I had which was as fine as baking flour

Cuttlebone as you know is just an add on to a little extra calcium, the beak wear thing is also a bonus. I have cuttle bone scattered about, take it or leave it approach, also quarry chalk rock's which they have a go at occasionly. Lime Stone flour is my main sprinkled supplement now.
