Egg development of THH
Could anyone post here what I am expected to see in the egg at what stage, please. I have seen here some amazing threads with pictures but did not find any specific for Hermanns tortoises. Although I loved watching the photos for Star tortoise and Pancake tortoise, the timing for them will be very different.
I tried to candle my eggs (10 days old) and saw little circle on the egg shells (on 4 pot of 5 eggs) - it is probably chalking - so I assume everything is going well at this moment. When will I see the veins? What week? When will I see the ring of life? What should I search for after that and when? I am annoyed with myself that I did not document it better the last time I had eggs, so now I again don't know what I am looking for. |

That does sound like 4 have started to chalk and are fertile Between 10 and 14 days you should see the ring of life. After that you will see more veins. At about 21 days you should see the shadow of the embryo. The shadow should slowly fill the egg after that until you can't see anything but dark.

Thank you, Dan, for the time estimates. So soon I will see the ring of life!!! Exciting!
It may be that the fifth one will be fertile too; I haven't seen it chalking yet but I couldn't shine with the torch through that one very well because there was no space, so I did just quick look and gave up. |

3 weeks now and I can't see the veins. Are they infertile then?

I am sorry I didn't get to posting pictures yet. Life was a bit hectic. (and it will get worse with Christmas coming in less than a month!)
I am pretty certain by now that the five eggs I wrote about in this thread are infertile. They were laid just over a month ago, so I should definitely see something in the eggs and there is nothing there. No dark shade, no circle of life, even the tiny white spot on four of them where I thought the eggs were chalking did not change (did not spread all over the egg to chalk completely) so it couldn't have been 'it'. Anyway, I will post pictures as soon as I get to it. I am not giving up on those eggs, even though I am 95% sure that they are not fertile. But I will leave them in incubator, just in case... But the brilliant news is that 2 more tortoises laid eggs - yesterday my girl who was so badly ill for quite while and started getting better only around September laid two eggs. And another one laid six today!!! Those are her first ever eggs! It is so exciting! |
