Hi there. I think these will be one or other of the Testudo Gracea tortoises.
http://www.britishcheloniagroup.org.uk/caresheets/spur The babies in the gumtree advert might be any of the 4 recognised subspecies. Some members on this forum might be able to identify them. To state the obvious it's irresponsible for anyone to accept into their care any tortoises that they are not in a position to look after properly. There is a post here by the admins that covers the question of posting links such as this. http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=71396 Sadly there are large numbers of tortoises on gumtree, preloved and other sites which are in need of proper care. In the case of some of these adverts, the owners of the animals being advertised would be prosecuted if they had a dog and were making such a bad job of it. It seems different standards apply when it comes to tortoises.

"Atlas Mountain Tortoise" is what the local sellers in Morocco call the Graeca's they illegally pedal to tourists. If these are UK bred as stated, the certs would not say "Atlas Mountain Tortoise". My guess is...no certs.

Interestingly I learnt today that DEFRA are reviewing the current animal related licensing schemes, concentrating on the sale and trading of pets. The legislation, Pet Animals Act , hasn't been updated since 1951. This was all referred to by the RSPCA in their latest magazine. They would like DEFRA to provide regulations with species-specific codes of practice. The main article was called 'the rise of the dragon' referring to exotic pets and reptiles. There is obviously concern over internet sales. I will have a look at the DEFRA site sometime.
