Default Chicken traumas

I've had a bit of a day today. My old ex battery hen has developed sour crop. A condition that can be caused by a number of things but basically their crop (sack just below the neck where food collects before passing into the stomach) fills with fluid and can, if left untreated drown them.

I have been emptying her crop and trying to get her to eat some live yogurt, which helps bring the natural balance back to the crop. I will be getting some maggots tomorrow, they will eat away any blockage she may have inside.

To empty her I have to pick her up, massage her crop while tipping her forwards. Fluid then runs out of her mouth. You have to remember not to hold them upside down for too long as they can drown.

I just hope she's better tomorrow.

Oh i Hope she recovers.

My Hen, Lady Lay, died from sour crop.

We were making her vomit and lots of vile smelling brown stuff was coming up (we only did it a few seconds at a time as chickens have no gag reflex)

We were told to give her Live Yogurt and Bokashi (SP?) Bran.
