[QUOTE=vikki;659823]This kind of links with my other thread with regards fast weight gain and it seems some think that providing dried weeds/food can help to slow weight gain as obviously in the wild they would not always have lovely lush weeds but would spend quite a period of the year eating very poor/dry vegetation.
Hi Vikki. I think it's worth saying that when plant matter dries out the material that is left is a lot more concentrated. Most of the water is gone but the bulk of matter is a lot less. The nutrient value of it isn't reduced all that much by drying but the size of it is. For this reason I'm doubtful that drying food and feeding it would lead to slower growth.

Thanks Ozric
What level of protein should be ok? Found a concise prepared diet list here of the usual pellets on the market: http://startortoises.net/diet-pellets.html Last edited by markbigears; 27-10-2015 at 01:59 AM. |

I thought it was around 5% but will need to recheck. Ash is ok for dogs (can make them hyper if I recall from my uni days) (edited - when I say uni days it was a home course !!!, never went to Uni as a student....) but again shouldn't be so high for Torts. CB

Good points - although I think my two would be far less inclined to pig out on the dried stuff than the nice lush weeds. They will just about eat several mouthfuls of pre alpin now if they are hungry enough, my main idea as well was to try to make use of the abundance of weeds and flowers I have now for the times they are harder to find - might try putting some in the oven on a low temperature for an hour or so and see what happens!

Hi Vikki I've dried some leaves on newspaper at home before and found I didn't need to use the oven. Just spreading them out near a radiator had them dried in a couple of days. If you do use the oven I think they would be dry in quite a short time!

With regards the white python food my main concern would be the suggestion that it is fed alongside fruit and vegetables - may be ok for a few species but definitely not for the majority you could also probably buy a similar product much cheaper if you look at the ones aimed at rabbits - burgess do some :
