Angry Indian Star RNS :(

I fear that both my little Indian Stars have RNS They are bubbling through the nose and upping the temps has not helped I'm taking them to the vet tomorrow, does any one else have experience of this? What is the best antibiotic to use and is there any they should avoid? Thanks

Awww,

Good luck at the vets and I hope they feel better soon

When I first got squirt I was given baytril and some farm animal decongestant?

The baytril was is liquid form and the decongestant in powder form!

She did get better for a few weeks but then it came back and it's been like this since 2008 but now she's in her Viv she doesn't get snotty?

Thanks Herpard I'm baffled as to how they have got it, though it may be from a draught as my kids will not keep the doors shut my throat is sore from shouting at them to shut the door! They are upstairs in my bedroom in isolation now.

Most stars are allergic to Baytril, so another antibiotic would be the safest bet. Well RNS is a bacterial infection so had to be brought on by stress that lowered the immune system. Remember when giving an antibiotic you want to try to keep the tortoise at a constant 30C for the whole course of the antibiotic, which helps the tortoise fight off the infection.

Thanks for that Danny, I was sure I had read somewhere that Stars can't have Baytril.

I would house them separately, if one is weaker than the other or just to be cautious.

Sorry to hear that Clare. I'm sure if they're on the antiB's (and they're taking them!), as well as upping the temps, this will help. Good their appetite is fine which will keep their strength up. I think when Dougall had rns a couple of years back it took 8 - 10 days for the medicine to kick in. xx
