I'll admit it makes me really angry when I hear of people using cypress mulch!
Cypress take a LONG time to grow and our cypress trees (I live in Florida) are being destroyed just so people can use them for mulch for plants and pets! It makes no sense! I'm glad it's costing you so much money, maybe that will be a deterrent for some. There are other options available to you, save a cypress tree and choose one of them |

I'm sorry you took offense to my post it was not my intention to start a debate about saving the planet but to provide the best husbandry i can for my tortoises. When i brought them i didn't do it lightly and wanted to insure i provide for them to the best of my ability. I have read many papers from other radiata keepers that say cypress mulch is the best substrate, if this is the case then thats what i want for my tortoises. If another substrate is comparable then i will look at that. I am open to suggestions from other keepers.

It's not really saving the planet - I mean to me it's so much closer to home than that. I have cypress trees in my backyard, they're really old trees. They're important to our ecosystem and are a beautiful part of our state. I just can't ever justify using cypress mulch for anything, not even tortoises.
A lot of radiated keepers use orchid bark, eucalyptus mulch and coconut coir. Cypress mulch isn't the only good substrate available. A lot of people can't even find cypress, so it's definitely not a necessity. |
