redfoot diet...
hey im a newbie...i used to own a sulcata but due to moving i gave him to a friend of mine...now that im settled in at my new place i have purchased to red foots. i love them im so excited everyday to watch them eat and soak and what not...but when it comes to the eating part what i do is i put some romaine, kale, and dandilion greens in a dish for them and i put them in front to eat and they just up and walk away. but if i put a hibiscus in with romaine theyll eat hibiscus a lil bit then turn and walk away, now if i throw some mango in there and smash is into pulp on the romaine they will try to eat all the mango and by using mango as a pulpy jam they get ramaine with it...so i need to know if there is a way to get my tortoises to respond better and eat the green stuff with out using all the sweet fruits and stuff that their not suppose to get everyday...i just really need an overview on what i can feed them everyday and what should be treats...cause not all care sheets online say the same stuff although they all agree on the greens everyday it seems but mine dont seem to like them...oh ya i feed them in the morning...do you think its better to feed in the after noon...itll be hard caus i go to work then school. sorry i rambled any input is appriciated thanks.

Hi, I have a redfoot and he can be a bit fussy when it comes to greens too! I use, dandies, clover, petunias, pansies, and various other weeds, i have recently tried hosta and he likes that too. he also likes nasturtiums and lavatera.
What i do is give him his greens in the morning and his fruit in the evening, otherwise he is like a little child and will only eat the fruit and leave the greens!! try and persevere with the weeds and try some of the others i have suggested, he will come round soon enough, especially if he is hungry!!! Mine wouldnt touch weeds at first and it took a while but he's fine now, (if a bit fussy!) hope that helped

Oh, and i forgot to say, once a week or so, a small amount of protein. either mushroom, rehydrated cat biscuit or chicken.

Mushroom isn't a protein source this should be added to the veggies/fruit content

I don't worry to much on the protien front , but the occasional treat of yes cooked chicken or prefrably hydrated cat biscuits is a good thing
