Default Question about casting and safety

I just saw a really neat photo of a casting of a Sulcata's shell and it got me thinking about how safe it would be to make one of my own Sully's shell, kinda the same way pregnant women make casts of their belly.
Obviously Plaster of Paris is OUT of the question because it heats up, but I'm kinda thinking about something more along the lines of paper mache.

I have alot more research to do about it before I even think of do a cast of my big boy, but I just wanted to get ya'll input.

I keep an outline of him (when he stays still long enough) to record his growth and thought a cast would be a really cool way of doing that.

Im going to try to insert the pic that I found, sadly i think the shell that is used no longer has a resident, but i still think its really cool.
