Default Gravid Female Dilema

My female Leopard is gravid and has been displaying very dominent behaviour towards the others - especially the male.

She really does butt and mount him but the worst thing is she tips him over - the females she just mounts.

Should I go to the vets and have her induced as this behaviour has been going on for 3/4 weeks now and I really cant leave her alone with the others and I am reluctant to keep seperating her as it means keeping her indoors.

She has shown no interest in the nesting areas.

I am really hoping that once she has laid she will become the placid girl she used to be !!!!!

hi i really think you should give her a chance to lay naturally as when they are induced it can take some time before they calm down unlike when they have dug a nest and laid.if you have seperated her perhaps the change in enclosure has caused her to retain and she needs to be left in her regular enclosure so she will feel relaxed enough to lay.also i would be more inclined to remove the male as his presence being the dominant animal in the group may be what has contributed to her aggression.

leopards can take a long time to get warm enough to lay and often will be found digging late afternoon or even early evening after a full day in the sun.she needs time to bask without being disturbed by the male and once she is warmed up and relaxed may attempt to lay outdoors.provided she has an area of deep soil that catches the sun from midday through the afternoon.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have been leaving her in the enclosure these last couple of days as my male loves to be indoors anyway - he always heads straight in as soon as the enclosure door opens !!!!!
It is just a shame the wet weather has come back and they cant be out.

She did start to dig about a week ago - I shut the others out but she only dug around 2" and then walked off - I was so disappointed.

She has had 2 clutches in the year I have had her - the first time she was induced and the second she laid in the nesting area of the enclosure.

Terry you are spot on about the time of day - both my girls have started late in the day each time. I also have a basking lamp above the soil.

I will leave her and see how she goes - I guess I am just lucky my shifts allow me to be in all day - at least I have been able to put my male back on his feet a few times today !!!!

I know Bindi Evie certainly keeps the girls well stimulated !!!!

It is worse this time though because of Ernie's behaviour she really is aggressive towards him and seeks him out !!!

I dont think I ever had to get up to see to the kids as many times as I do this lot!!! It took me half an hour to read 2 pages of the newspaper when I sat outside at the weekend.

" bitten off more than I can chew" comes to mind at the moment .......................
