I can also understand OPs frustration with her situation getting to a specialist vets

In my opinion though Hana although your vet has done lots of tests you seem to be no further forward - I really hope things improve soon you must be in termoil over it all

Firstly I would like to thank several of the forum members for their very kind and generous comments.

Secondly, I would like to apologise for any upset my post caused, that was not my intention at all. However, I do totally stand by what I said.

I would like to clarify some points to Hanako:

1) Yes, I am a veterinary surgeon, and although I do not claim to be an exotic specialist, I do have quite a bit of experience with tortoises. I see them as patients on a practically weekly basis, and I have my own.

2) I have not 'diagnosed' your tortoise with anything, it would be wrong to do so, since I have not clinically examined it myself. I have merely stated that she will be in a negative energy balance, and would likely benefit from an oesophagostomy tube. Neither of which are diagnoses.

3) Related to the above point, you do seem quite happy to accept the 'diagnoses' of certain other, non veterinary forum members, and you were even requesting that someone prescribe you flagyl based on the presumptive diagnosis of protozoa.... I commented on this at the time though.

4) Myself and the other forum members that have commented are not suggesting that an oesophagostomy tube is a cure, or 'the answer'. It isn't. But, it is a very valuable management tool, that I think your tortoise would benefit from. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with them in the past - patient removal of the tube is a recognised risk, yes it does happen, but in my experience, not often at all. I think in this case the benefits outweigh the risks. As alley cat rightly says - daily stomach tubing is a stressful experience for a tortoise.

I am sorry if you feel irritated or upset by my comments, but I am just trying to help. It is the desire to improve your tortoises welfare that drives these comments, even if they come across as blunt.

Kind regards
John

How is she doing? I've been thinking about you while the forum has been down and hoping your tort is eating and doing well.

Well done for finding this thread Wendy. I've had it on my mind too.

My girl is much better. Her weight is stable and she is eating. She is not putting on weight enough to catch up the weight she had before, but she is not loosing weight. she seems to be happy.

That's excellent news and I'm so pleased she's eating now and not losing weight. I'm sure in time she'll gain weight and slowly build herself back up. Well done!

Well, I am not celebrating yet. I think we are out of the worst, but there is still a long way to go. Like when you recover from illness and although you are healthy, you are not quite in full strength. She doesn't look weak, but I don't think she is quite in full health yet. But thank you very much for thinking of her!

oh that's a relief. I was dreading your answer in case you said she had gone. So pleased it's better news. You have worked so hard with her and it has paid off. I would like to thank you on her behalf for being so dedicated and sticking by her.
What was the first thing she ate, just out of curiosity?

I understand you being cautious. I'm just relieved she's actually eating herself. That has to be an encouraging sign of recovery and as I said, in time I'm sure she'll gradually build herself back up.
