fridge hibernation - Page 2

i havent hibernated yet, i didnt last year, not to sure on the fridge idea...

If you read the article it explains that the tortoises are wrapped up normally, and the wrappings were removed (and the food added) for the photographs.

if the wrappings were removed that means there would be even less room in there when the wrappings are on which makes it even more unbelievable that she can get 75 in 2 fridges unless the 50 odd in the other fridge are all hatchlings but even so, 50 odd hatchlings all wrapped??

if anyone is thinking of using a garage/shed for next year's hibernation then its worth seeing how much the temps vary through the summer, if its affected by the outside temps then you will need to think about insulation or heating. One possibility is to make a sort of cupboard area and just insulate there, we did that with the area under a shelf and it worked well last year, the area was blocked in and lined with cheap loft insulation, it needed a tubular heater on a thermostat but will work. As most garages are opened etc that can make a big difference to the temps plus having a boiler etc the summer is a good time to start thinking and testing. Bearing in mind the really cold spell last year I doubt any where wouldn't need a heater and the tubulars are the cheapest, its not worth waiting untill the last minute, similary if you are planning on using a fridge again that needs a few weeks testing for temps, you need to aim for 4-5c, lower than 3c is dangerous and if the temps get above say 8c for any length of time some torts will wake.
