Kent/South London Tortoise Meeting june & august details
june details
scroll to page 4 for august details Hi guys, I know a few of you are from Kent so I thought I'd let you know about a tortoise meeting being held in June by a group called 'Just Me And My Tortoise'. This informal group has been going for years and is run by a lovely lady called Wendy. You would all be very welcome Here are the details Just Me and my Tortoise Tortoise Group for Kent & South East London Telephone 020-8462-9920 or 0787 4034320 Email: wendyandamelia@o2.co.uk Next Meeting: Sunday 7th June @ 1.45pm Keston, Kent 2pm-3pm Lynne Stokes B.Vet.Med M.R.C.V.S. From the Exotic Animal Centre in Essex "Tortoises, Terrapins and Turtles: They are what they eat!" Abstract: I qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1984 and set up practice in Harold Wood with Martin Lawton in 1985. We are now married with two teenage children, two dogs and a motley collection of tortoises. Over the intervening years I have kept a variety of reptiles including terrapins, tortoises, lizards and snakes. The majority of these have been re-homed from people who could no-longer keep them for one reason or another. Apart from Veterinary work I am also responsible for assessing our trainee nurses and have a role in educating young people in schools in and around Harold Wood about reptile care. My talk will focus on the correct feeding of various species of Chelonia in captivity in the home environment. I will particularly concentrate on those species that I have kept myself including the Mediterranean species, African Desert species, African Hingebacks and American Box and Musk turtles. I will also talk about the pitfalls of incorrect feeding including mineral and vitamin deficiencies and toxicities and liver and kidney disease. Unfortunately I can illustrate some of these with some of the mistakes that I have made over the years! In addition I will mention some of the husbandry of these species and how it affects their metabolism. Assisted feeding of poorly tortoises will also be covered. Hopefully you will leave having a better understanding of the workings of your tortoise’ digestive system! Followed by Tea / coffee, question time and informal get-together We hope to have a handout from Lin King (Tlady). Available at the meeting: Tlady Herbiseed 10g bag for £2 and Nutrobal 100g (please order in advance) Please contact Wendy to book a place. The speaker has requested donations to The Zebra Foundation for her talk Just Me and my Tortoise hope you enjoy the meeting I heard Lynne Stokes speak myself at the BCG symposium and she was absolutly delightful

That would be great thankyou Vicky12 i dont mind driving at all, but i do have a lousey sense of direction. I once took my son out to Port Lymphe zoo for the day, its quite near Folkestone which isnt that far away. Any a few wrong turns and a few hours later i ended up taking him to the Sea Life centre in Hastings not even in the same county.

There are 50 people coming so far to this talk/meeting. If anyone else would like to come and needs help with transport please let me know as I may be able to help arrange a lift. The 246 bus stops in the same road as the hall and runs from Bromley South if that is any help.
Hope to see as many SW as possible. Wendy |
