Default Redfoots

Hi,
Im very interested in getting some redfoot tortoises. i have done some research, but i just had some questions.
In the redfoot enclosure, how do you get the humidity to the right level. (is it just by spraying the cage with water?
What substrate is best for them?
What weeds and fruit do they eat? and how much of each?
I also read they can eat protein, if so, how much and how often?

If there is any further info i should know about, please let me know.
Sorry for so many questions, but i just want to make sure i know every thing i need to know
Thanks
Laura

You get the humidity right by having damp substrate and spraying the tortoises with warm water.

Substrate for babys either sand and soil (more soil than sand) or repti bark. They hold the water well.

All non toxic weeds are fine same as you would feed a med tortoise. In the winter i give them more fruit as weeds arnt around and in the summer they just have weeds with the odd ocassion of fruit.

I give protein one a month, depends on how much on size of tortoise.

Would the moisture in the air be enough to hydrate there skin,
i know that they need baths, but if they get dry skin is there anything else that can be done?

Yes always have a spray bottle to hand if they dry out just spray them. But if your substrate is damp enough this should not happen.

Ok, thanks for that
Also, i was going to get a vub strip light and a infra red bulb, but im not sure if that is correct.
Is there a better way of doing the lights to get the correct temp and humidity?

The one thing in my experience with red foots is that they do not need as much UVB as a med tortoise, it can actually damage their eyes, i would give about 4-5 hours of UVB. In the wild they live in the rain forest and they would only come across pockets of sun light that have manage to get through the tree's.
