Default Spider Tortoise

I get many new tortoises but I rarely get as excited as when I got this one...

This is the female hatching out...

I had 3 female Spider Tortoises... no male. I gave them to a friend on breeding loan. He has a good tallent with this species. This year he got babies out of my females. I told him I have a female that is the only one I hatched out about 10 years ago. He works at the Knoxville Zoo which is also working with the species. He arranged to trade my hatchling for a known male at the zoo to give to me. I'm so stoked over it. I now have a CB pair of Pyxis a. arachnoides with a cool history. The male I got was part of a TSD study.

The female is the one with the lighter markings. Another note... the male has split scutes.

What beautiful tortoises, never seen or heard of them. How big do they grow, they look like a small breed.
