Have you contacted your bank as it was them that made the payment to the insurance company?

Your daughter has insured her car elsewhere so probably did not actually inform the original insurance company that she was not going to be renewing with them. Although they said they would not re-insure her, did she receive a renewal notice/premium due letter? Usually a letter comes through stating that the payments will be taken from "such and such" account etc.

As she was late with payments she was lucky they didn't cancel her insurance mid-term!

Seeing this has made me quite paranoid, I have changed my insurance provider for the first time this week, I feel like I best go check all my various banks to ensure nothing has left that shouldn't have. I really feel for you and hope it gets sorted soon.
