So basically even if the komodo has less protein in it than the other pellets it doesnt matter anyway as we dont know what damage excess protein can do? When some tortoise keepers go on about too much protein makes them grow too much and pyramid or grow deformed is that a load of rubbish then? What about that photo of the really deformed turtle/tortoise who was fed on dog food? (on tortoise trust) Wouldnt that be too much protein?

(that boyfriend of yours has got to go)

No... we don't know what 'excess' protein is. I'm pretty sure that there is also a huge difference between animal and plant forms of protein.

Yes... there is no direct evidence to support the idea that excess(?) protein adversely affects the growth of a tortoise. The idea of to much protein = rubish.

Dogfood(animal protein type) is mostly meat byproducts... some muscle...gristle... fat... skin... not nice stuff. The grain based dog foods... are probably good for the tortoise.

Sorry if I'm coming across as thick I'm just interested Do you think that the companies that make the pellets know what torts requirements are? Or as ozric says do they just make a nutritional chemical soup? Could I email them and ask? I would've thought they would put more fibre in to them but if its as ozric says we don't know what their requirements for fibre are even though they have a high amount in the wild.. but its because thats the only choice they get?

I get you now over the protein and dog food, its just you see that saying stamped all over tortoise websites.... almost been drilled into me 'too much protein makes the tortoise grow too fast/pyramid etc' Thats what everybody whos anti pellet says about pellets!

Oh and Terry isn't going until one of the admins make me take it down... I'm surprised he's lasted so long, would've thought he was inappropriate seen as he only has a basketball over his bits.

I under Ozrics point of a chemical soup as being a concoction of all the required nutrients in the properly known ratios.

I'm pretty sure that those who come up with this concotion do have an idea of what they are doing. The folks I've been corresponding with have given me very reasonable explainations to my questions... which have stem from these questions. I had my own questions long before this topic hit the internet groups.

The formulas they come up with is based on a specific biological model. This is also how vitamins are formulated. The formulas are then tweeked to accomodate specific species requirements based on their foraging habits and metabolism... at least that's how I understand it.

Loads of stuff on the difference between meat and vegetable proteins http://www.tcolincampbell.org/course...plant-protein/ (too complicated for me that one)

and .. http://www.livestrong.com/article/25...table-protein/ (more readable for a dim person like me )
