Amazing creatures, butterflies and Moths. The transformation they go through from caterpillar is nothing short of a miracle. Fascinating, harmless and beautiful.

I found a similar caterpillar(lime green with white spots and very fat!) last year around this time as well but it was rushing about on the ground looking for somewhere to bury itself to pupate so I put it in a box with soil in and within an hour it had buried itself and pupated and emerged the following March as a beautiful Deaths Head Hawkmoth.

What a wonderful experience. In the summer we found hundreds of cabbage white caterpillars on our cabbages growing in he gargen. We didn't have the heart to kill them so just left them. A week later they had made their way up under the eaves of our garage and window sills. Some emerged and flew away a fortnight later but some are still there, hopefully ready for the summer. And our cabbages are fine too.
