I think they should keep a record of the A10 number, name and address on their data base for people who lose the A10 and don't have a record of the A10 number. Then you could call them and give your name, address and where tort was purchased then you could get a copy of the certificate. Alot of people who buy tortoises don't know how important the A10 is and lose them.

Suppose it would be too time consuming for DEFRA to do this.

At the end of the day the important thing is for a hatchling the number, when you sell a hatchling you only have to give the new owner the number and you keep the cert and then send it to defra so the new owner can get a cert if they have just the number, from an adult tort point of view from what I understand either the number or microchip number will do which means defra must keep a database microchip numbers and their matching a10 numbers.

once the tortoise is 100mm the new a10 that replaces the semi complete one ( thats the one they have until there 100mm ) the owners name isn't changed when the tortoise changes hands because at that point it's permanently marked ie: chipped so the only way they can keep records is by keeping the a10 and chip number on a data base .

But then if a tort is micro chipped but the owner has lost the paper work can they not get the number by taking it to the vets and having the microchip read? A good reason for having your tort chipped even if your keeping it just as a pet!

yes thats right you can but that would only work if you updated the a10 with the chip number before you lost it !

You would have to be very unlucky to lose the lot if we are talking about full A10.
One could scan the tortoise to get the chip number,Then get a new A10.
